Government raises compensation for farmers in district


The state forest department has increased compensation amount to those farmers in the district, whose crops were destroyed by wild animals. The crops are frequently damaged by wild animals such as boars, elephants and Indian Gaurs in the district.

Earlier, the compensation amount to the farmers growing coconut was Rs 2,400 per plant, which has now been revised to Rs 4,800. Similarly, the amount for mango, banana and other plant growers has been doubled as well, said Rangnath Naikde, deputy conservation of forest (Kolhapur).

The locals have been regularly demanding the state forest department to revise the compensation amount for the loss of crops and produce. The demand was raised by farmers' leaders as well as villages located at the base of the mountains and close to forest land.

The attacks on farmlands by wild animals are sizeable in the district and go up after January every year. The water bodies inside the forest areas start shrinking and the animals have to walk long distances in search of food and water. At the same time, the farmers near forest areas are growing sugarcane, maize, groundnuts or paddy that are major source of food for these animals.
