Victims of apathy, cruelty


The next time you eat red meat, make sure it is properly cooked and hygienically sourced. Failing to do so could land you in hospital.

The Agriculture Market Committee premises in this small town in Krishna district is full of activity and the busiest day is Saturday with sheep and goats arriving in thousands from several surrounding mandals and Guntur district. On an average the daily transaction of buying and selling these animals is Rs.10 lakh at this place and the committee gets one per cent of this as cess.

Despite such a large collection of cess and so many animals brought here, there is hardly any facility for providing water to the animals or putting them in enclosures before the buyers select and carrying them to Vijayawada or other semi-urban towns for selling meat on Sundays.

A visit to the market yard by The Hindu team revealed how the goats were tried very close to the main power lines that led to some animals getting electrocuted.

With the mercury touching 43 degrees in this part of the district, animals under severe stress due to travel in cramped pick-up autos and caged vans gasped for breath and were restless due to parched throats...........Read More
