Anakaputhur jute weavers try their hands at leather fabric


In an attempt to sensitise people about the advantages of clothes extracted from natural fibre, weavers from Anakaputhur tried their hands at weaving cotton mixed leather scraps to meet demands from across the country.

The materials were introduced at the 32nd edition of India International Leather Fair (IILF) at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, recently.

S. Padma, who has been weaving such materials for more than a decade, says her passion for nature made her discover new ways of fabric making. “After trying our hands on banana, aloe vera, kapok and other natural fibres into handloom, we felt it is necessary to try leather cotton fabric from leather scraps. Cotton yarn mixed with leather and soaked in vegetable dyes gives an impressive look to the dress materials that we have produced so far,” she says.................Read more
