Sculptor carves nadaswaram in stone


A modern day sculptor, Chinna Kannu (53), is determined to carve a place for himself with the legendary sculptors of the Chola era. From a little known hamlet Koolipatti near Namakkal, he has sculpted a one-of-its-kind working model of a nadaswaram in black stone.Kannu considers this the work of a lifetime after having a carved out a veritable collection of stone idols and architectural sculptures for Hindu temples in the last forty years. Koolipatti is less known to the public but is quite significant on the State’s sculpting circuit.A native of Chinnappampatti near Omalur, Kannu says he left home when he was five. After aimlessly travelling around, he says he landed in Mahabalipuram where he found work at a sculpting unit. “After several years of helping master sculptors I became a first assistant to the famous Thirugnanam.My creative talents unfolded while assisting him,” he says.“As Thirugnanam started to give me independent work, I started to stamp my unique mark on my creations.
