2016 turned out to be a “dull year for Indian philanthropy” with a total of Rs 2,334 crore pledged for philanthropic activities and the list of philanthropists released by The Hurun Research Institute, shortened from 36 to 27 names.
HCL founder Shiv Nadar topped the Hurun Philanthropy List for the first time, with a donation of Rs 630 crore, followed by Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan giving away Rs 313 crore.
Reliance Industries frontman, Mukesh Ambani, topped the Hurun Global Rich List India released in September, 2016 came third, with a donation of Rs 303 crore.
Interestingly, donations from the IT industry shrank by a glaring margin. Azim Premji, chairman of WiproBSE 1.31 % and one of the pioneers of the Indian IT industry who has been topping the global list consecutively for the past three years till 2015, secured the 13th spot, pledging Rs 34 crore against the mammoth amount of Rs 27,514 crore last year...............Read more
