'Education System Neglects Indian Contribution To Knowledge'


CHENNAI: Is our education system fostering a sense of nationalism in impressionable youngsters, beyond just getting them to memorise the national pledge and singing the national anthem? This was the focus among an intriguing panel discussion with former Union HRD Minister MM Pallam Raju, RSS top gun Dattatreya Hosabale and SASTRA University Dean (Planning and Development) S Vaidhyasubramaniam.

Tucking into the topic, Vaidhyasubramaniam spoke about the importance of having self-confidence in our national values, “Vivekananda took a big tour of India, a country that was impoverished by flood and famine, before going to the World Parliament of Religions in 1893. The confidence that he had, in telling the world that India would emerge a superpower, was astounding. That is self-confidence,” he said. “Even at the primary level, it is considered a major achievement if students want to leave India. Are we providing them enough to kindle a spirit of nationalism?
