250kg of sea cucumbers seized in Tamil Nadu


The coastal security group (marine) police at Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district on Thursday seized 250kg of sea cucumbers - a marine species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act - and arrested a 32-year-old man for smuggling them. The accused, B Abbas, of Vedalai was transporting them in his autorickshaw.

Based on a tip-off about smuggling activities, the marine police were keeping a vigil on the national highway near Rameswaram. The police stopped Abbas's autorickshaw when they noticed plastic sacks in it.

 The sacks contained 250kg of dead sea cucumbers. He was transporting them from Mandapam to Vedalai to hand them over to a smuggler identified as Hamid. "The sea cucumbers were unprocessed ones. Once processed, they would be smuggled to Sri Lanka," said a marine police official....Read more
