Using art to fix the water crisis


In December 2015, when the city of Chennai was recuperating from the damages caused by the massive floods, debates about climate change, urban planning, and river restorations started taking shape. Goethe Institute, Chennai, a non-profit German cultural association however, came up with a very innovative plan — using art to create awareness about water bodies and solutions to restore them. The Water Art Festival, scheduled for January 14, 2017 will have well-known artists from across the world, including our very own Parvathi Nayar, install their artwork along major river bodies in the city. The idea is to get the public to visit rivers like the Cooum, which are otherwise neglected. “Rivers are the arteria of the city. You cannot turn your back to them. You’ve got to embrace them,” says Helmut Schippert, Director of the Institute. “This will be held during the festival of Pongal when people usually visit Marina beach and other popular locations.
