DIY meal startups hustle to appeal to Indian audience


DIY meals are the perfect option for those who want home-made food with exotic ingredients. With the exact quantities you need of basil, thyme or mushrooms, startups like Burgundy Box, Ordook, iChef and Awesomechef are tailor making the menu for your kitchen.
The Mumbai-based Burgundy Box which is a food delivery platform has been supplying the DIY and ready to eat meal kits for over two years in the city. The company now plans to foray into the kids segment. "Despite the visual appeal of the DIY kits, the repeat order numbers tell another story with occasional orders. The real struggle for food lies in the daily planning and execution of meals," said Shabnam Mehra, co-founder, Burgundy Box. Given that kids are the fussiest eaters, the startup is now getting ready to offer DIY meals kits for children on a subscription basis.

"We will offer a subscription plan for 5/6 days with flexibility to shuffle dates with advance intimation and a menu planner with veg and non-veg options, so the child can choose what they want to eat. Parents can receive freshly prepared kits for the chosen meal at the pre-appointed slot, and the meal can be made in 15 minutes," says Mehra.
