On Sunday morning, passersby stood curiously staring at the brand new refrigerator that popped up overnight on a pavement near the Besant Nagar Tennis Club. The fridge, branded with a sticker that says 'Ayya Mittu Unn' (Eat After You Serve), the 'community refrigerator' on the sidewalk belongs to no one in particular but is for everyone in general.
Chennai-based orthodontist Dr Issa Fathima Jasmine on Sunday set up the free-for-all fridge that she said is meant to "serve the needy".
"It is not for the rich or poor but everyone who needs something," Issa said. "Anyone can place a food item inside and anyone can take what they want from it."
Like the autorickshaw driver who stopped to place three biscuit packets in the fridge, or the family that put a watermelon on a shelf, or the walker carrying two bottles of water who, halting to read the message on the fridge encouraging people to donate or take, left one of his bottles inside....Read more
