Promote skills among youth, says Kalam


Trade and industry should focus on identifying the core competencies of the State and link these with employment opportunities and economic activities, the former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, said here on Friday.

Speaking at “Voice of Tomorrow,” an initiative of The Hindu and the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, Mr. Kalam said the industry should study the skill profile of youth, identify gaps in this area with a long-time perspective and suggest time-bound development plans.

The skill development programme should focus on employability. It was estimated that India would need 300 million to 500 million employable skilled youth in 10 years. The high and higher secondary school syllabi should include skill development.

Only developed States made the country developed. In order to achieve this, Tamil Nadu should aim at trebling the per capita income from Rs. 68,000 to Rs.1.2 lakh by 2020, increase literacy rate to 100 per cent from 70 per cent, reduce infant mortality rate to less than 10 per 1,000 live births, eradicate polio, leprosy and tuberculosis, and minimise the unemployment rate.
