Recycle League: NGO teams battle it out to clear waste


Anna Nagar Avengers, Mylapore Maplais, Nungambakkam Knight Riders, Alwarpet Spartans, Adyar Assassins and Chetpet Champions — these are not the names of local cricket clubs, but NGO teams that collect recyclable waste from neighbourhoods.

Chennai Recycle League was launched on June 5 by Paperman, an NGO, to encourage the practice of recycling and to support organisations working for the economically weaker section. Each team is led by an NGO and the income from the sale of recyclable waste will be used to support the organisations connected to their respective regions.

Mathew Jose, founder of Paperman, said the league was launched to create awareness among the public and to reduce the amount of garbage going to the dumping grounds. "Chennai generates more than 5,000 tonnes of garbage per day, of which more than 40% are recyclable waste, worth more than 1 crore," he said..............Read more
