Kalian Ramanuja Koodam at Sriperumbudur teemed with a crowd comprising students, teachers and headmen of various villages from Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts recently. The teachers, addressed as acharyas, had assembled to represent the single-teacher schools set up by the Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society in rural Tamil Nadu.

The schools serve as tuition centres in villages in the evenings, supplementing the primary schools. Students aged from five to 12 are taught by educated youth from the village in the schools. Out of the 580 such schools, 150 are to be supported by Larsen and Toubro Limited, who would fund their operation. Allocating `36 lakh towards the same, Ramana VS, general manager CSR, L&T, said that the children and teachers drove them to allocate the funds towards the schools as part of their organisation’s corporate social responsibility. “The schools not only teach, but also impart values to students, moulding them to be good citizens.
