CHENNAI: Can India benefit from Liberal Arts universities? India is still caught up in the myths that surround Liberal Arts. That it is only about Humanities and not Art; Liberal Arts schools do not have research opportunities; that there are no internships and the most famous of them all — Liberal Arts is not for the best, are some of the myths that the panelists shattered at the ThinkEdu Conclave. “Liberal Arts nurtures interdisciplinary thinking that is holistic and does not restrict critical thinking,” said actor-banker R Ravichander, Group President and Head Business Development — South, Yes Bank. He reasoned Liberal Arts foster right-brain thinking. “It does not prepare students for a single career. I would like to see a mix and match; technological courses and Humanities offered together,” he said. In increasing takers for Liberal Arts, some of the major stakeholders are parents. “Parents should first become liberal. They always said Cricket won’t feed you, concentrate on academics.
