Southern bench of the NGT constitutes committee to monitor desilting of Srivaikuntam dam


The Southern bench of the National Green Tribunal has constituted a 5-member committee to monitor desilting of Srivaikuntam dam.

On Thursday, the tribunal appointed the members: CPI leader R Nallakannu, State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) commissioner Siya, advocate Thavasi Rajan, social activist S Nainar Kulasekaran and SMA Gandhimathinathan member of Srivaikuntam reservoir protection forum.

 Earlier, S Joel of Tuticorin had moved the tribunal saying Srivaikuntam dam had been built across Thamirabarani river around 150 years ago, but the reservoir had never been desilted. If desiliting was done, the reservoir could store additional 8 TMC water, which would irrigate more than one lakh hectare land.
 
In the last hearing on August 23, the state government has informed the southern bench that it had already issued a government order to desilt five dams including the Srivaikuntam dam...........Read more
