1) What’s COP and why 21?
Paris is the 21st stop for 196 nations (conference of parties) that have met since 1992 to tackle climate change. The Paris meet hopes to:
1. Keep warming below 2°Celsius. Poorer nations want to limit it to 1.5°C. Scientists say: At current levels of pledges that countries have made on emissions cuts, Earth will warm by at least 2.7°C. 186 nations pledged emission cuts. India hasn’t.
2. Mobilize the $100bn a year (agreed at Copenhagen 2009) committed by states, global bodies and private sector from 2020 onwards to develop technology and build infrastructure to cut emissions.....................Read more
