Illegal coal mining continues unabated at a number of places around district headquarter of Korea in Chhattisgarh. Hundreds of quintals of coal is being extracted from these mines in remote forest areas on a daily basis.
While district mining officials claim that these areas do not come under their jurisdiction, since they are in forest areas, forest officials do not have any information about the illegal activity.
TOI visited one such illegal coal mine in the Dumarpani hill, about 25km west of the district headquarter. The hill is situated beyond the village of Phatpani of Sara village panchayat. A track of about 4km from the village leads to the foot hills from where the mine is about a km uphill in dense forest. At first, opening of the mine appears to be an animal's den, but closer look reveals the mine inside.
