The dangerous lure of Western Ghats


Despite the legally-sanctioned eco-tourism walks, quite a large number of visitors undertake treks furtively.

With increasing awareness and better road connectivity, the verdant forests of the Western Ghats in Karnataka have over the years become a popular trekking destination.

While several groups offer legally-sanctioned eco-tourism walks through the trails of the forests, there is a large percentage of visitors who end up doing the treks furtively.

“Unlike before, trekking in the forest legally has been made much easier now. One can book treks online for a limited number of trails. Trained guides are also provided by the forest department. It is unfortunate that people, especially the youth, continue to go on their own,” said Vinay Luthra, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests of Karnataka.............Read more
