An excited group of foodies huddled together for the final group photograph at the end of the Mylapore food walk on January 8. Amid tasting the yummy plates of kozhukkattai, bhajji and rosemilk, it also turned out to be a walk towards friendship between strangers.
The food walk, led by Sridhar, one of the administrators of the Chennai Food Walks Facebook page, began at the Gomathy Mess in Mandaveli Street. “It is going to be fun, trying to eat and discover the area! We start here,” starts Sridhar. “I’ve been here for quite a long time. If you come here by 5 pm, you won’t get anything. That’s the reputation that this place holds.” After a plate of sudda sudda idlis and bondas, we began the food to our next destination — Ganapathy Ghee. As the group walked, people whispered historical details about the places they crossed. Ganapathy Ghee was more a shop than a mess or restaurant, since 1941. Their specialty — as the name suggests — ghee. Rich, healthy ghee from buffalo milk, almost brown in colour. By the third stop, Kalathi, which was known for its rose milk and paneer soda, people were seen chatting animatedly.
