The concept of Hindu rashtra is not theocratic … It’s an adjective of the nation, not an objective’


Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) last week held a three-day conference to outline its world view. A lecture by its chief Mohan Bhagwat appeared to signal a significant change in the organisation’s stand on key issues. Rakesh Sinha, a BJP parliamentarian in Rajya Sabha, discusses RSS’s evolution with Akhilesh Kumar Singh:

Going by views of Mohan Bhagwat, has RSS discarded chunks of thoughts of its former head MS Golwalkar?

Golwalkar is not at all properly defined by the two books ‘We, or Our Nationhood Defined’ and ‘Bunch of Thoughts’. The former was ‘Rashtra Mimansa’, authored by GD Savarkar, and translated by him (from Marathi). The latter is a collection of his speeches made in the late forties and early fifties. So, things which had been said during the partition as well as in early post-partition years cannot be the eternal views of RSS.

Bhagwat authenticated Guruji’s philosophy and views in other writings like ‘Guruji: Man and Mission’. Moreover, Golwalkar’s interview with Saifuddin Jeelani on January 30, 1971, itself is a departure from many things said in ‘Bunch of Thoughts’. However, critics deliberately avoided it.
