The compulsory helmet has shown results: Hospitals have reported a drastic fall in the number of accident cases involving two-wheeler riders since Wednesday, and no case of death due to head injury on Thursday.

Government General Hospital - to which most of the head injury cases are referred - did not see a single case between 2pm and 10pm on Wednesday. "This is a rarity, and now we know the reason," said Dr Karthik, a house surgeon at the GH causality ward.

The hospital sees around 50 cases of road accidents every day; on Wednesday it recorded 39 cases, and only a few of them were two-wheeler riders, that too with minor injuries on the limbs. "On Wednesday and till late afternoon on Thursday, most of the accident patients were pedestrians who suffered leg injuries.
